re-ringing a B&S engine
« on: May 01, 2014, 08:26 »
Has anyone done this? I bought a rotavator with a 3hp I/C engine which has low compression and only starts by squirting some oil into the cylinder to raise the compression. I was thinking about buying some new piston rings and fitting these after giving the bore a bit of a rub with sandpaper to remove any glazing. Does this sound like a feasible plan? I don't want to spend too much money on it as it won't get used a lot. Where is a good source for the new piston rings?

I think you're right, probably better to just get another engine rather than mess around with piston rings that may or may not work. Mines a fairly recent engine, so could swap over most of the other bits. Luckily there's a couple on ebay near me so I'll give that a go. Shame really as I love tickering with things ::)

Picked a used engine up from Ebay for £40 yesterday and after swapping the pulley over it works well. Still stalls if you let it bury itself, but starts first time, so may just give it a bit of tlc. Its previous life was on a cement mixer, so I doubt it had much in the way of maintenance, certainly judging my the state of the oil ::) I'll keep the old one for spares.

Stalling could mean the clutch needs adjusting.

Stalling could mean the clutch needs adjusting.

It's a manual clutch which just engages two pulleys using a belt tensioner. Nice simple design.

Over sized rings are a very good and cheap repair. Wont take long to do.
