This raspberry nonsense
« on: April 30, 2014, 19:05 »
Can anyone give me a definitive way to tell which are Glen Cova, Mailing Jewel and Tulameen  After last years non-existent harvest this winter I cut everything but 3 canes down on all the plants. The theory was Glen Cova would fruit on old canes and Id be able to spot it and Mailing Jewel and Tulameen would need new canes.

I've just checked and they're all producing flower buds

GC & MJ are summer fruiting, so cut down fruiting canes after you have picked.
book doesn't mention other one.

all summer fruiting so I guess you have cut some canes that would fruit this year.. My way is to cut any cane that has fruited... so you cant go wrong and cut a new first year summer cane by mistake..
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

All 3 are summer fruiting

They were supposed to be an "all season collection" from parkers, I assumed (wrongly it would seem) at least one would be autumn fruiting?

My way is to cut any cane that has fruited...

Something which is really needs them to fruit for you to be able to tell  :nowink:

So if I have this correct I cut (after it's fruited) anything I have tied up this year - and tie then the rest up for next year, so Im not expecting any fruit from new growth this year?.

That's right anything that fruits in the summer cut out after fruiting & tie in new growth to fruit next summer. If it fruits in the autumn it doesn't need tying in to wires but may need something around the whole lot to keep it together then prune in early spring, then you will see the new shoots start to emerge & they will fruit in the autumn.my autumn canes are now about 6" high, my summer are 4/5/6" high with flower buds just visible.

I have tulameen and ive found that any stems that have fruited and that I have forgotten to cut down, simply stand as dead and woody stems the next year - no regrowth.

When they start to shrivel up you can still see which has fruited so not too hard to select the ones for cutting.

The point is that you were expecting to be able to tell which is the "autumn" fruiting one by being the only one which will fruit this year, on new wood.  That will still happen.  I think you were also expecting that it wouldn't fruit on the old wood that you left one cane of.  But it will, evidently!  It's just that because autumn fruiting ones also fruit on the new wood, we always cut them down after that first crop, because it's simpler and preserves the later cropping.  Unless the varieties have walked into each other and you don't actually have one cane of each variety...
