How cold does it need to be to kill tomato plants
« on: April 30, 2014, 16:07 »
I have many tom's that I have seeded in little propagators and are now reaching the lid. I have been getting them use to the temps outside and taking lid off and then replacing over night.

I really need to take the lid of to allow them to grow for next few weeks before transplanting but concerned that overnight temperatures will kill them. Is 7/8 Celcius too cold over night. I think with the cold weather may get down to 3/4 degrees c. I dont have a greenhouse but can move them to a shed overnight

The lid needed to come of ages ago... as soon as the plants germinated the lid should have been off..

Where are they now that they are so cold? You need them on a good sunny windowsill and not in the GH at the moment as the temps are about to go downnnnn..

ill keep the lids off now, thank you for the lesson I thought it good to keep them warm with the lid after germination. But will keep lids off now. I can move them to a shed overnight to avoid the cold temps. They are just outside enjoying the sun right now

Tomatoes have a way of telling you it's too cold. Their leaves turn bluish green.
Mine are in a cold frame, min temp lately about 5-6*, but the daytime temps have been well up, and they are growing very well.
A ground frost is forecast for this week-end, but I am more concerned about the potatoes ???

A general rule of thumb is that they don't like it cooler than 10 degrees.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If they have been in just a cold frame lately with temps of five degrees, the damage is done.

I think it might be a bit more complicated ;)  For example (don't quote me)

toms might survive 3 nights at 7 deg C if it warms up well  in the day.
they might survive 2 nights at 5 deg C
They wont survive one night at 3 deg C

But once they have gone blue, there is no recovery. Anyway I am bringing mine indoors tomorrow night, and firing up the old paraffin burner for the other seedlings
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

They will probably survive all those temps. But won't be any good for it.

What about if they have a good layer of fleece over .   Running out of space too many plants at home I am frightened to take to the greenhouse.  With the weather and lack of light they seem to have stopped growing.  Just hope the weather picks up soon

Will they be happy as Larry if we get the predicted frost tomorrow night?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I said don't quote me. I was guessing. :)  :)   The point I was trying to make is that we all quote on here 10 degrees as if it a magic number.  At 10 degrees toms don't die but they don't grow either.  A month at 10 deg C did for my toms. (2007, 2008 & 2009)

But once they get a few weeks old and the weather is warm (15-20 deg) followed by a sudden few night of a cold snap -  they don't like it much but they recover well.

Just brought my inside as its predicted to be very cold tonight,  possible frost.
They've been sulking last few days in an unheated greenhouse, but are surviving. I was a bit tooo quick to sow this year.
hope to plant them out in a few day's as it's supposed to be warming up. They will be under a side of house lean to, which gets warm in the sun and keeps most of the cold away. Always grow them here, but it's been a bit cooler this year so far.
