Lettuce question
« on: April 18, 2014, 20:29 »
Lettuce are my nightmare crop, but I am very popular with the slugs

I have been looking at grow bags suitable for salads so that I can have them at home, and I wondered if they would be OK in washing up bowls (with suitable drainage holes).
I guess the roots are not too deep, and I have a couple of old bowls, and unless I am mistaken they have them in Poundland. It is only for the two of us.

Any opinions, is there a problem I haven't seen.

Thanks

Elaine

I can't see a problem either.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

No problem with the growing - but the slugs/snails will still want to eat them  ::)

I've grown cut and come again in cat litter trays for several years, this year I have them in mushroom tubs and I seem to remember someone saying they grew them in gutting which I'll also be try when I get 5 minutes  :)

That sounds very gruesome for a simple lettuce!  :tongue2:

Is this the first mention in 2014 of that Winter festival that we can't mention on here until much nearer December?

Well they might have a fighting chance, rather than certain death. I'm sure they wait for me to plant them out  ::)

I've got washing up tubs full of salads, works very well raised of the ground on a frame to keep the slimeys off- but the little s*ds hide under the rim....cat litter trays on the other hand are rimless  8)

I grow lettuce in guttering works really well. I either transplant to grow to full head or take as needed.

If the slugs are having your young seedlings, an alternative could be to buy a "living salad" from Lidl, split it up and plant that. They're only 99p and the plants are big enough to fight off the slugs. I do it in the polytunnel in February when I'm running out of other lettuce and it works great, you can get about 30 plantings from each tray.

I bought some Living Salad from Lidl last week for 89p. Transplanted 60 plants into gravel trays with holes drilled in the bottom.  Could probably have got another 60 plants from the tray. Needed  to trim off larger leaves as the plants get established as they went floppy, but every confidence in a good crop.

I grow my lettuce on a raised bed (that still gets slugs)  but I put a few slug pellets around hem and don't have any problem. Maybe not the done thing but it works for me .

Why don't you grow them on a cool window sill till they get big enough to withstand attacks?

I find it harder to fight the slugs in the home(flower/shrub) garden than on the plot.

I have used lidl living salad as seedlings. Normally buy a strip eat half and plant the others.
Good way to supplement your own seedlings at modest cost
