Nettle Tea Fertilizer .... when is it made ?
« on: April 12, 2014, 10:55 »
Last year I saw on Gardeners World Monty making nettle tea, which I tried. My tomatoes did very well indeed, so I am keen to try it again this year .... especially as I now have an allotment as well as a back garden greenhouse.

My question is .. when should I make the tea ?

There are a lot of nettles growing near the allotments, so I may as well get there before somebody else. Maybe the leaves aren't ready yet for the tea, which is the reason I'm asking now.

Last year, following Monty, I just went out in the car, stopped at the nearest lay-by and found enough nettles for my project. This year, I'll need more.

thank you for any advice provided

As long as you cut before flowering, I do not think it much matters.

I'm making mine tomorrow. There is loads all over the place. For me there is a woodland/nature area near to where I live and they grow like crazy all over. Just don't decimate an area. Nettles are an important habitat for numerous insects. I walk around and take a small amount from each section so there is still some left for the insects.

You obviously didn't grasp the nettle! Being serious, I have seen my neighbour pulling them out with her bare hands, so maybe there's something in it?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

You can hold the leaves by the middle & not get stung - not sure I'd want to grasp them though!

Made my nettle tea today. Used two empty gromore tubs (10kg size) and filled with chopped up nettles. Weighted the content down with a brick, covered with 10L of water and put the lid on. Not sure if you are meant to cover with water but I did it like this with comfrey and it worked. Will leave it for a few weeks and then strain each tub into a 100L water butt and top up with water.
I'll start again straight away if I can find nettles that aren't in flower.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!
