Onion spacing

Seeds usually say a tighter initial spacing, then thin out.  For onions the norm seems to be start with 5cm and thin to 10cm, but that does seem a bit close for sets Casey.  They hardly ever fail, so you wouldn't want to thin them.

I would go straight to 10cm spacings, with a decent width between the rows that you could get a hoe down 

That sounds a bit more reasonable     Could have been worse.  You could have planted them 12cm down and 5cm apart 

I give mine a bit more room than recommended as I can't see for looking and do more damage than a little with a hoe. I get down to their level and weed them carefully.  I have made a wooden spacer for mine as I'm a saddo 

Oh thank goodness it's not just me.  I keep my bit of wood safely on the shelf in the shed.  I've written "Shallot/Onion Spacer" on it so I don't chuck it away by mistake

Yep I have(had) a stick. So its about ………………………………………… < that far apart  . Rows need to be far enough apart to run the hoe down in comfort even when in full foliage and within row spacing needs to be wide enough to get the hoe between onions. It changes every time I plant
