Beetroot sorry another question!
« on: March 29, 2014, 13:57 »
I started my beetroot off in cells and it's all come up now, when's the best time to plant out and should I plant them individually or in clusters? Thanks :o)

Let them get 2 good true leaves i.e. seed leaves + first leaves and then plant them out in clusters. They will push each other out of the way as they grow and will not all be ready at once. Probably wait about a week after they are planted out and reduce them to 3 or 4 per cluster.

That is if you are in Essex? Good idea to enter your location in your profile.

The ones I planted in cells are long and straggly (leggy?) and don't stand upright well. I popped them in the ground today, they've got two choices, live or die! I put some seed directly on the ground a couple of weeks ago and then planted the rest of the pack today. It'll be interesting to see which do best. I've read they don't like being transplanted (re planting the thinned ones) but I'm hoping they don't mind being moved form there cell onto the ground.
My favourite weed is a raspberry ;)

Thanks guys! I am on the herts/Essex boarder so it sounds like next weekend they will meet their fate.

Beetroot always look leggy but they will grow - that are quite tough..
