sea weed
« on: March 23, 2014, 18:17 »
I live on the coast and the hens love there greens. However I've run out on the allotment and was thinking of giving them sea weed (it is free after all) anyone tried it? The only thing that worries me is the salt!
cheers
David

I have heard of people feeding hens seaweed based supplements but I would be wary of fresh seaweed. Not just because of the salt but also possible contaminants.

second that there will be a load of salt in it. maybe you could boil or cook it to try and get rid of it but i wouldnt bother, plus if the water companys dump sewage etc in the sea ??? you can grow your own cheaply or get some out shopping esp seasonable fruit and veg, xx

Well fist of all, you shouldn't be taking seaweed from the beach unless you have permission ;)

Second of all, seaweed is very high in iodine and could be harmful if fed in high amounts.

Better stick to deep leafy greens like savoy cabbage or kale :)
