Anyone out there grown Yakon before.
« on: March 23, 2014, 08:26 »
A friend of mine has just given me 5 Yakon plants to grow this year. I was just thinking has anyone on here grown this before, and what do you think of the tubers it produces , and or what does it taste like.
I understand it is a very big plant.

never heard of it before.

very interesting read though. sounds like an excellent idea if you haven't got the time to wait or space for fruit grown on trees.

i'm interested in giving a few a go next year. more to add to the list.

This chap grows yacons all the time and is very knowledgeable. You'll just need to turn down your volume a bit as he has a very loud voice: HERE  and  HERE

All the people I've watched who grow yacons live in very warm areas like Australia and California. Sounds like you might need a greenhouse for them, if you don't have one.

Hi and thanks for the replies and interesting links that everyone posted. I just spoke to my friend and he grew his out in the open last year. he said he got about 4kg from each plant and they store very well just like potato's.
I am looking forward to growing these Yacon plants. I am planning on planting the Oca in between them this year, lets hope it all works out well this year, and I get lots of yummy South American Veg to eat over the Christmas period.

Real Seeds have a good guide to them which is where I got my tubers from. This year with be the first year I have grown them so they are tiny on a window ledge at the moment.

I think that is a good idea. Hopefully Kate and myself will be able to post some pictures during the season and keep everyone informed on how they are doing .

Ok I dug up one of my Yacon plants yesterday as I could not wait any longer !! And yes I am a happy bunny I got 8kg of roots from this plant. I will leave the other three plants for as long as possible before digging these, I will post some pictures of the final harvest of these three plants when  have got them out of the ground.
But yes very happy of the results so far and I think I will be growing them again next year.
