Which tomatoes for 2014?
« on: March 22, 2014, 22:04 »
Anyone growing a new and/or exciting variety this year? There's a £5 T&M voucher burning a hole in my pocket.  I've already sown shirley, sungold, black Russian.

Nothing new and exiting here this year on the tomato front - so, only three young little tumbling toms nestled on the windowsill at the minute ..... I don't eat them, but can't resist growing a few.    :D.

I blame my fat fingers  :nowink:   although looking at the price of T&M seeds it might take me that long to save up for a packet

I'm looking forward to trying my dancing with Smurfs....

Is that a tomato or some sort of funny tobacco ?  :nowink:

I've found a packet of Arnold root stock so I think I might play with grafting again, which is pointing me down heirlooms so  I've put brandywine on the list.

Red Alert in the cold frame, not the very tastiest but easy, early, compact and prolific.

Sweet Million in the GH - do well for me, very tasty and lots of 'em.

Inca Plum - for cooking into sauces, good yield.

Having reluctantly decided to drop Sungold because I can't stop most of them splitting I'm not sure of a 4th variety, but having bought a packet of seeds for 20p from Lidl it may well be Marmande unless something else inspires me in the meantime.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

My Marmande were a total washout last year.  :(  Like you I will be going for the Sweet Million again - lovely.

I really sympathise with your pain LilacSandy - and it is the same with cukes. Cannot wait to pick my own. Yumm.

Oh - in what way (failed completely or just generally underwhelming?)

Just failed completely - my other toms did well but not the Marmande. The plants did not grow well and the toms were very small and few and far between. Not sure that I will try them again - but then again I do not like to be beaten.

Thanks Springlands - might just try one plant, and give it a stern warning about its performance!
