What onions are people growing
« on: March 22, 2014, 17:39 »

Last year I grew sturon and red baron onions .  I had loads although they weren't particularly big ,this year
I've got stuttgarter so I'm hoping they will be a bit larger .
Can anyone recommend a large variety to grow .

 Cheers Carl

I've grown Stuttgarter and Sturon at the same time and they both produced big onions. Maybe more weedng or fertiliser is needed?

Egyptian, Befordshire Champion, Red Baron, Kelsae, White Lisbon, Senshyu Yellow Globe

Lost quite a lot to rot last year - will try harder with correct storage this time round.

Cheers,
Balders

Kelsae (from seed)  are the largest onion I've ever grown - last season for the first time, and didn't get them dried enough to keep them long.  A terrific onion - one a week will do nicely  :D

I've not managed to grow ailsa or Bedfordshire quite as big (from seed); bedfordshire are good keepers - sowings of Bedfordshire this year have been poor, so I'm going to have to look at sets as an alternative, so will be interested in what folks say  :)

This year, from seed, I'm growing Kelsae, Bedfordshire, Red Baron and Figaro (long shallot)

This is my first year growing onions, and opted for Yellow Rynsburger which is apparently good for storing.

This year I am growing in the onion department:

Overwintering sets: Radar,  Electric

Spring sets:  Stuttgarter Giant, Red Baron

Spring sown from seed:  Yellow Rynsburger,  North Holland Blood Red Redmate (red spring onion), Kyoto Market (Japanese bunching onion)

Shallot from sets:  Longor, Red Sun

Shallot from seed:  Zebrune

Sounds a lot, it probably is!

I would have liked to have grown Turbo from sets, they have given me excellent crops in a previous year. The only 2 places advertising I could find were T&M where the cost was extortionate, you might as well just buy the onions, and Wilko, but they never had any in stock at our branch.   I got them from Wilkos the time I grew them before.   Hoping that the above will suffice.   I grew Sturon last year, bit disappointed, but perhaps just not a good year for onions.

I'm going for Stuttgarter again as we like quite a strong-tasting onion and they also have a hint of sweetness too.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

We are growing Stuttgarter and Centurion, plus Ailsa Craig from seed. Oh, and White Lisbon spring onions. The Plotfather is the onion fan in this part of the world. :)

Growing Ailsea from seed for size. And Centro and Ciclope for kitchen. May use one or two for the showbench too. ;)
