The problem of Heshey
« on: March 16, 2014, 08:19 »
One of our home bred shumens has been a really strange subject. When we rehomed our boys we couldn't decide what sex this one was...hence the neme, Heshey. It looked like a hen, was small built with a small comb, acted ladylike, but had slight sickle feathers (which fell out) and some glossy cape feathers. When the boys went he still looked like a girl, but has now started crowing and is growing his adult male plumage. He still has a small comb. Dad Sevi has now decided enough is enough as we don't have many hens any more and wants him out.

So my question is will he mature into a 'proper' cockerel? He is seven months old and should look almost mature as his brothers do, they are in charge of their own flocks in their new homes.
This is him on the left with his hatch brother at five months old

And this is him today

I had the very same thing with some rhode island reds a few years ago.

For months we were convinced it was a hen. It wasnt until about 9 months old did it start to look like the other cockerals (and start crowing too)

yes I had a "hen" araucana who suddenly blossomed into a male at 9 months, some are just late developers  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.
