Please can you help me identify this plant?
« on: March 15, 2014, 21:47 »
Hi there  :)
I need a bit of help identifying this plant please....someone at the allotment gave it to me, as she had just dug it up.  She didn't know what it was, but said she didn't like it.  The only thing she told me about it was that French people used it in cooking!
The stems are soft with a deep pink tinge, and the leaves look similar to those of the carrot/parsley family and smell peppery.
I've looked in books and online and I can't work out what it is.  I'm not sure how to grow it.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thank you!

I've just looked up lovage and it's really hard to tell.  The stems look slightly different, but none of the images I found were great.
Thanks :)

The leaves do look like those of lovage, and the pinkish tinge to the stems is typical too  :)

And that depends on which part of the country you're from, as to how it comes out!

May I suggest that it's done with a more of a West Country lilt as the alcoholic beverage of lovage originates from down that way. Best drunk with brandy, of course!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Wonderful, thank you :) I've heard of lovage, but not ever come across it.
Looking forward to growing it and seeing how it turns out :)
