Identifying a plum tree.
« on: March 14, 2014, 19:25 »
I know this is a bit of a long shot but I am trying to identify the plum tree in our new house.

It has small to medium sized yellow fruit and fruited in August last year (although things were all very late last year of course). The fruit was beautifully sweet and a bit gage like in taste.

It is currently just starting to blossom. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas what variety it might be? Anyone else have a yellow plum that is just coming into blossom?

August, "Yellow Pershore"? eggsize and a midlands variety  :)

"Warwickshire Drooper" is another august yellow but the plums are larger

I had an apple tree that I couldn't identify so I took a leaf plus one mature apple to my local gov't agricultural advice office and they were able to identify it for me. You might have similar luck with your plums at your local office.

I wonder if it is an Oullins Golden Gage? They do flower quite early.

Reine Claude has yellow fruit too, but it is flushed with red and green, not like a gage really.

How lovely to have inherited such a productive tree  :D

It certainly was delicious although there were only a couple of plums last year despite it's size. I don't know whether it doesn't have a pollination partner and that's why it didn't have much fruit on it despite the good year and tons of blossom or it has a biennial habit (when we viewed the property in June/July 2012 before buying in sept there seemed to be loads of immature fruit).

It's not Reine Claude as I have planted that myself and it is only just coming into bud. It was also much less yellow last year.  Oullin's is a possibility.

Have thought about sending it to the RHS which you can apparently do with prior arrangement (got an apple I would also like to identify) but am impatient and curious to see how far I could get without them. :D

Oullins Gage does not need another pollinator, so the lack of fruit last year may be due to frost affecting the blossom, or lack of pollinators of course.

Frosts saw off a lot of plum blossom in our area last Spring, so let's hope for better this year  :D

Another possibility is Dennison's superb - it also is yellow plum with an excellent gage like flavour. Normally ready for picking mid-late August.
