which chickens?
« on: March 11, 2014, 15:14 »
Even warmer here today in Southern France. Hot actually. Still getting the coop and run ready. Collecting chickens on Thursday. Excited.
I have read loads on looking after them but wanted to ask
I fancy getting two sussex and one orpington. Will they be ok together or would it be better to get three sussex.
Love this site, so good to chat about our animals and gardens.
Sue in France :)

I would have thought they would be OK together though I do know that Orpingtons can tend to be bullied (in spite of their size). As you are getting them all at the same time and if they are the same age I would say there is a good chance that it will work out.

Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Think we are going to go with Two or three Sussex and a Brahma which will live free range in our garden.
What do peeps think?

You will need fairly high fencing to protect the areas of garden you don't want destroying, well from the Sussex, the Brahams not so much (they are too heavy to fly, and can't jump very high).

Sussex are good egg producers, brahmas not so much (perhaps 3-4 eggs per week) and their eggs are small to medium in size (expect up to about 50g only)

On the other hand Brahmas are beautiful to look at, generaly have lovely personalities, and are (again generally) very friendly.

I do miss my Brahma girls...

Well we did a 6 hour round trip to collect our three Sussex pol chickens. They were so quiet in the cat box on the back seat I wondered if they were alive. Well, they def are. Managed to steer them into the run and they seem fine. They also seem quite big but I am assured they are only 6 months old and ready for laying. We shall see.
Phew, I feel exhausted.
More later.
Thanks to all for your help with helping me decide and for the info on bedding. i will let you know how I get on.
Busy times ahead. 3 dogs, one cat, three chickens and a husband   :D

Can't quite believe we have only had the three sussex three days and I have a lovely egg already.
It is such a great thing to check the nesting box, thinking no it's too soon and finding wow an egg there.
Well pleased  :)
