Broody Already! Noooooooo!
« on: February 27, 2014, 14:55 »
 Last August we hatched out a clutch of hens.  Today I discovered that the Buff Orpington - 6 months old - is broody and sitting fast!     So I'm trying to find some turkey eggs to put under her - or maybe quail.  I'm never going through the trauma of having to put down a cockerel chicken again!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Quails crow too! not as loud but quite shrill and just as early in the morning.

One of my silkies has just come out of her broody phase. She's looking quite thin compared to the others.

And turkey stags can be a bit scary too!

On the plus side quail are easy to dispatch and prep and have a surprising amount of meat on them.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Oh my, I didn't know that quails crow too!  We hatched out a beautiful, gentle Brahma cockerel, but a month ago, he became sexually active and very, very noisy.  It didn't help that he was already 2 1/2 feet tall!  So we reluctantly took him to the vet to be put down.  The vet sat there, stroking him  and talking to him.  Next thing we knew, he asked if we would mind if he didn't put him down.  That he had several people that would probably want him.  We were surprised and relieved.  I guess he was successful, as the next evening, my neighbour came to my door holding two Dutch Bantams and said they were sitting right across our front gate, on our bins.  So now we have Mr and Mrs Pee Wee in the broody arc.  He crows, but it is a silly little squeak that just makes me smile.   ;)  Now I have another broody hen and the whole process starts all over again.

Mum2MJ, we live in a very rural part of Norfolk, surrounded by farms, The Broads - Mr Pheasant and his family visit us every day.  There are several local butchers that would be happy to take quails and their eggs.  One of the farms in the close vicinity raise Norfolk Black Turkeys.  I'm just spinning my wheels looking for alternatives!

Just a note to let you all know that I am taking advantage of this freezing weather today and chucking Peaches out of the nest box to experience it.  Might take her mind off being broody.  Fingers crossed!

What about using a wire blooming box. That works most time it did it for us.
Build the cage with the wire netting. Make sure the little dears can't have a rest on any corners or side.
I hope that help some.
It's better to be over the Hill than under it!!
