Where do you get your compost
« on: February 22, 2014, 09:19 »
I am planning on doing a lot in my garden and a lot of container growing this year, when I just had my allotment I'd buy it by the bag from Homebase etc. I know it wasn't the cheapest way to do it. Now I'm thinking of buying it by the ton. Where do you get yours and how much do you think is reasonable? Thanks!!
Anna, enthusiastic amateur from the herts/Essex boarder!

You need to let us know where you live. Try Google , it should give you some results.

I know that the local authority where I stay supply compost from their Green scheme, you just take your bag along and take what you need. Unfortunately, I only found out about this at the start of the year as last season spent a few ob buying from various garden centres running buy 3 for the price of 2. So will be visiting council centre shortly to have a look.  :)

Ask at your local independent nursery, even if they are usually wholesale only.  They will be buying it in for themselves and will be able to provide 1 ton bags for you ....  the issue might be getting it delivered.  But ask ...

Bulk deliveries from these, might be worth a look - free delivery.

Thanks all! I'm on the herts/Essex boarder. I shall check out some of the suggestions. With the local authority is there a limit to how much?

might be worth looking into the cost of well rotted manure by the tonne, this can be mixed or used straight on it's own.

also worth looking or asking on gumtree and freecycle for manure. it takes a bit of time and effort to collect and if it's fresh needs time and space to rot down. but if you can, itsaves a fortune.

it may also be worth asking garden centres if you can buy a pallet of bags at discount prices. you would prob be able to collect in car loads from the centre rather than paying for delivery.

Annad, don't just grow in manure.  It won't have much nutrition in it.

How many pots will you be planting in, and what sort of things will you be growing?

It will help us if you put your general location into your forum profile (what you've written above is fine) so we can remember whereabouts you are.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi I'm based in Takeley, I have a garden and allotment but will be container growing carrots, potatoes, yakon, oka, and some assorted pots of flowers on the patio. Think it will be around 8-10 pots of pots, 2 large containers of carrots, 4 tubs of yakon, 3 tubs of oka, prob 5-10 tubs of plants. As you can see quite a lot of compost! I will ask about manure as a soil improver but looking for actual growing matter! Thanks all for your help!

Hi Annad 83 , I am in Hunsdon which is not that far away. If you look on e-bay there is a company in Brentwood which does bulk loads and they deliver too.

Council 'compost' is not usually seed compost but good as a soil improver, I had 4 tonnes delivered when I redesigned the garden & re sowed the lawn, cost me £60 for delivery but compost free, but no good for pots

Check Maddingly Mulch ( mulch.co.uk )
They are just up the M11, not sure if their prices are good and cannot see a simple compost but worth asking.

Make enquiries at any local allotment sites.
