Avoiding allium leaf miner
« on: February 17, 2014, 18:13 »
I'm plagued by these but would really like to grow some decent garlic this year. Im wondering if I can avoid them, I know I could cover everything in enviromesh but it's expensive and ugly.

The RHS website tells me that the females lay their first eggs March to April then a second helping October - November. I planted some music in 9cm square pots last year, Im wondering if I can keep them there until May? either in the greenhouse or something enclosed with a small footprint.

Could you cover the planted out garlic with a cloche made of enviromesh, or a non-lacy net curtain until mid April, and then remove it. You can plant them in rows to fit the size of a cloche

You will harvest the garlic before the next round of egg laying  :nowink:

I've probably got enough garlic for an 8x4 bed but I didn't want the garden to start looking like netsville, with the strawberry and blueberry  beds already covered. I did catch the link for the mesh DD posted though, so I might just bite the bullet. I simply can't stand any more of that supermarket rubbish.    >:(

Yep - but it's just in time to nab the leeks - It's a horrible pest.
