seed potatoes what to look for
« on: February 16, 2014, 17:28 »
Hi today I looked at seed potatoes, some had chitted whilst others felt soft. In one shop they were next to the heating, anyway I chose some King Edwards which felt firm but had some tiny shows of chitting about to commence, whats the best way to purchase seed potatoes please people  :)

Avoid long white shoots, any that feel mushy and any that are completely soft at this stage in the season.

Ones with chits about to start are fine.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks Yorkie, yes many had the long white greenish chits already so I avoided them, I canjot believe how many were already mushing and chitting throughout various stores, a lot of the stores were really warm aswell not ideal, but ended up getting the Eddies in Wilkos they looked and felt nice to me  :)

well I for one have a mix, I bought 4 packs from poundland, a 2kg bag from wilkinsons and today another 6 packs from the range, similar to other years and I always get something come up.

Yes Grendel I found some in poundstretcher fir 1.50 for ten seed potatoes, but they were under a heater and were mushy, I have only done potatoes once before and I spent a good few pound on them, the crop was okay, but not many potatoes, not for the amount of compost and fertiliser I gave them, they cost me a fortune

This year is the first year I have been to a Potato Day and I would recommend it.  Our local organic association has an annual day with seed potatoes, mostly organic, for sale at 15p a tuber.  Wide choice of varieties too and excellent quality, and a talk from Alan Romans thrown in.
Previous years I have ordered from JBA who are excellent, but the postage is a bit pricey.

Large hens egg sized, firm, green of chits just appearing, would be perfect for me.
