Couldn't resist a 50p bargain of these onions today for 50 sets...will they grow if I stick them in now?

Just a few months too late - but they will grow a bit but they are not storers... eat them as green onions. If you are short of space bin them and get summer sets.

They are really an over-wintering type.  Sow them in Autumn for an early crop the following year.

People here plant their overwintering onions till as late as March! Yours might not grow very big, but they'll tide you over till your main crop comes on stream. I haven't put mine in yet but will probably do so next week. I did this last year, perhaps even a bit later, and had acceptable tennis-ball-sized onions.

It's surprising how sowing practices vary, now I come to think of it. Broad beans don't get sown according to UK seed packet instructions. Here they go in four to a station, stations 30 cm apart. They nearly always all germinate and harvests are pretty good.
