Bay Tree advice please
« on: February 16, 2014, 02:52 »
I have a really big bay tree about 15ft high and 10 ft round. Shortly I will be moving house and was wondering has has anyone had experience of taking a large  branch( about  3 ft cutting)of a Bay tree successfully.
Taken over neglected veg garden at new home. Enemy number 1 Ground Elder. Then there is the furry terror - bunnies - to contend with!
Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

I don't know about a cutting that size,if you do I'd certainly try a few normal sized cuttings as well.

As a crop, bay lasts so long I would be more inclined to dry the leaves from the 3ft branch and take some smaller cuttings which will probably establish to a size where you can take another small crop by the time you have used the first up.  But I don't think the flavour from drying now would be so good as in the summer.

Lovely to have such a huge bay!

I wonder if you could try layering a few small stems as well?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

We have a large bay tree and are forever finding bay seedlings lurking in all sorts of places. I'd have a good look around and see if you can find any for insurance.
