seed saving advice for peas, please.
« on: February 12, 2014, 09:43 »
I want to get a lot better at saving seed this year and am focusing on chillies, squashes, beans and peas. I think I've got the first 3 sorted, but I'm unsure about peas.

I will be growing a few pea plants in buckets with the idea of saving seeds for next year's crop. They won't be isolated - should I tuck them into a fleecy blanket bag to make sure that they self-pollinate? If I do that do I need to shake the plants/get into the flowers with a paintbrush? Or is there a different way of doing it?

Thank you.  :)

Peas are self pollinating - they can cross, but it's very rare - so no need to isolate them.

some advice here

Another tip for saving pea seeds - have them tied up on some sort of supports during growing season rather than letting them flop on the ground. They need to dry in their shells outside for best saving, but the shells need to remain dry rather than damp on the ground.

Thanks Mum and Trillium. I'm copying DD's early sowing of Kent Blue, as well as some other fancy-pants coloured pod seeds from my friend.

Once the seeds are dry make sure you keep them in a container with a lid on . I lost all mine last year to mice they can smell them out anywhere.

excellent advice here,

http://www.realseeds.co.uk/seedsavinginfo.html

i bought seed for the first time from this site and i am very impressed with the ethos. i know posts have been put on here before about this company but it seems a good time to mention them again. they actively encourage you to buy open pollinated seed to store yourself and build your own stock rather than be held to ransom by seed companies selling F1 seed at high price. check them out, there is a link on the left hand side which shows how to successfully dry seed as well.

I find this the most comprehensive guide specifically targeted at peas:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just be aware that mice do love peas, and so if you notice any empty pods around on the ground, best pick the remaining ones and finish the last drying under cover.

I put mine in flat straw baskets so they get plenty of air circulation, and keep them on the desk indoors where the sun shines on them.

Not conventional I know, but without this I would have few to save
