Mulch for Apple trees?

Hi.

I have a few apple trees that are 3-4 yrs old. I'd like to suppress the grass and weeds around them.  Would using black weed fabric do the job?

Yes, should do.

If you apply a mulch on top of the fabric, ensure it doesn't actually touch the trunk.

i've never grown fruit before, but giving some a go next year.

being a newbie to this could i ask why the mulch can't touch the trunk? is this the same rule for rabbit manure mulch and well rotted manure?

Can't remember why precisely, just that I've heard that you shouldn't let any mulch touch the trunks of trees.  Others may say it's a load of old hooley!!  :D
