I definitely noticed that germinating french brand on wet kitchen paper worked well for me in the past.  Not tried it with broad beans

It makes no difference.. I have done various trials and they may germinate a day earlier only.. They will germinate without any problems. They don't need heat and can germinate in temps as low as 5 deg C.. 8 upwards is ideal. I really wouldn't bother with the fuss of soaking first..

As Rowan says - they all germinate without soaking.

I usually soak mine, find that it gives the seeds a head start against the damp cold soil and the mice. I soak them. place in a multi-cell tray, then pot on into individual pots. I have much earlier crops by starting off in such a way, then carry on soaking and sowing for successional sowing.
