Straight from the fruit seed experiment.
« on: January 30, 2014, 08:53 »
Hi

Got my lit and heated propagator set up with a module tray inside all set to go...unfortunately the consensus is it would be mad to sow for another few weeks....so...

I'm going to have a play.  Opening up some red peppers, chillis and tomatoes from the fridge (will wash the tom seeds thoroughly) and anything else I can find that has seeds in it just to see what would happen if taken fresh from the fruit and sown in an optimal germinating environment.

Just a bit of fun to while away the time before I can actually get something proper done.

Anyone got any suggestions as to other seeds to try?

TIA

Adri

Put half a handful of peas in a tray and grow some pea shoots. Awesome in salads.

You could go to the supermarket and see if you can germinate some peanuts. Need somewhere like a greenhouse to grow to maturity later though. I'll be growing some this year.

Do you just use the peanuts in their shells?  And de-shell them?

I have started, lemons, strawberry and passion fruit (not a very edible one) straight from the fruits, ginger although not a seed is another good one to try, but it does require continuous warmth.   :)

Adri.. take the peanuts out of their shells. Don't use roasted, salted ones!

Can you try coriander please I am wondering if it would be cheaper to buy large bag of seed from ethnic aisle to sow as an insect attractant!

I do know a man who always buys his coriander seed this way and has success in growing it.   :)
