Samantha and Caserta savoy-type cabbages
« on: January 26, 2014, 10:58 »
Hi guys, I'm looking for some advice on Samantha (pointy savoy) and Caserta (mini round savoy). My partner is a bit fussy about cabbages - no spring greens allowed and even some of the sweetheart cabbages I've grown haven't been welcomed. But, he does like savoy types.

I've done a search and see that some members grow Samantha but nobody has posted about Caserta as far as I can see. I'd love some advice from people who grow them:

Do they really taste like savoys?

Can they really be harvested over as long a season as the seed suppliers claim (Samantha harvest is given as June to December, Caserta July to December)?

Thanks.

I thought I'd answered this yesterday, oh well!

I grew Samantha but only as an Autumn cabbage - although it is crinkly like a savoy, it is very pale and not strong flavoured like a green savoy. It is a quick cropper, so I would think early harvest in your climate  ;)
It didn't stand the cold early winter winds, when I tried it.

I've never tried the Casserta

Thanks mumofstig. Something odd happened to my post yesterday (it disappeared off the list of topics for a while), so you might have posted an answer but it got lost in the ether.

I wondered about the flavour. Seems too good to be true for a savoy to grow quickly early on and still taste true.

Still, as part of my ongoing addiction to seed buying, I've decided to try both just to see (that's my excuse, anyway)!

I like samantha as its small!  It grows fast too.  It,s not as dense as usual savoys but I don,t mind that.  I would recommend it

Not grown the other one though

Right, I'll definitely try both and report back. I love freshly-picked, home-grown cabbage, so the more the merrier.

The Samantha is quite a loose leafed job and won't stand too long, unlike most savoys.  One small, compact Sam will be enough for 3 people, or two if you like a lot.  I like cabbages that grow quick.  Hispi, although not a savoy, is like lightening so I'd recommend that one for sure  :tongue2:

Thanks for that. I've ordered some Hispi and Samantha. So far I've managed to resist the Caserta buying itch. They're the only seeds I 'need' from that supplier, unless of course I fancy some flageolet beans... And I do just love flageolet beans, and you can't buy them here...

Perhaps I should have posted this on the S.B.A. thread  ::)

I don't know exactly Muls. It depends on when you sow em and what the prevailing weather is.  They are really compact so much less time from sowing to eating than say with the huge savoys such as Ormskirk  :)

For really fast cabbage I grow Hispi (not a savoy though)
