Does anyone know what these two bushes are?

I'm told they might be blackcurrant bushes!?

Hope someone can help,

Many thanks,

Well, the one on the left looks a lot like my blackcurrant bush and the two on the right look a lot like my gooseberry bushes. They will be better identified when leaves appear, of course and even better when fruit appear.

Presumably this is a new plot? My advice would be to let them grow on for this year and see what results. You might get a pleasant surprise. If you really want to plant your own, leave these in situ until your newly planted ones start fruiting well. Otherwise you'll have a period of no fruit.

Thanks John.

Yeah, it's a new plot. I do plan on seeing how they turn out. I've never had a black currant or gooseberry bush before... Suppose I better read up on them a bit, just in case.

Cheers mate.

I think you're right too John.

I have neither of them but lots of people on nearby plots do.

Should be able to smell a blackcurrant bush, I pruned mine last week and the fragrance was unmistakable. If the smaller bushes are full of small thorns then they are probably Gooseberry.

blackcurrant smell of blackcurrant ( personally I think cat wee!!!)
gooseberry thorny
birds love both so a cage is required, pruning will help, but don't overdo and moving could be a prob as both have good deep roots.
dr hessayon does a very good fruit book as well as allotment book, try library first

But for a few bushes found on the plot I'd try some old net-curtain or a length of debris netting and see how they crop / perform for the first year.
