can I move garlic?
« on: January 18, 2014, 22:14 »
I planted garlic back in October and they are about 5/6" high.  But I put them in the wrong bed!  They are in my bed reserved for sprouts.  Can I relocate them or will they not survive.  Its not the end of the world - just awkward when it comes to netting the sprouts.

If you took a big enough rootball so as not to disturb the roots then it should be possible.

That being said, I'm not sure I'd risk it if I definitely wanted a garlic crop and can harvest it around the sprouts come July / August.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I can't plant through the garlic, they are too close together in a small bed system.  I will have to pinch the space the garlics should have gone into, for the sprouts.  Bang goes my crop rotation.  Live and learn, live and learn... :(

Can you not take out one in every ten or whatever you need to to get the baby sprout plants in?  It actually sounds a really interesting experiment in companion planting, I wonder if the cabbage whites would find the sprouts through the whiff of garlic?

Like all alliums, your garlic will not mind being moved but I would do it soon. They will not even mind if some roots are lost in the process. Many people start their garlic in pots and then plant them out once they are growing.
