Early potatoes followed by courgette?
« on: January 08, 2014, 08:45 »
Thinking aloud here and apologies if I'm well off the track, but is it possible to follow early potatoes with courgettes?
The reason being that we don't eat a lot of potatoes but I do want to grow a few, and wondered if I grew first earlies they would be out of the ground by the time the courgettes were ready to go in? I've put raised beds in plot 3 and want to get as much use as I can out of the beds, and it seems a waste to wait until the courgettes are ready to go in if I can grow something else first.
I welcome all comments. Thanks
 :)
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Yes, you can but they'll end up in big pots before you can plant them out.

I grow a couple in bottomless black flower buckets, stood on old trays - so that I can just sink the pot into the soil when it's time to plant them, without any shock to the plants. The roots quickly grow out, although you do still have to water the pots for the first week or so - a watering bottle next to them may be a good idea  :)

Thanks MoS. I'll see if I can find another place for the potatoes as I don't want to risk a courgette disaster.

I only grow earlies and do this by planting them in potato bags.  Have about 5 bags 5 seed pots in each. Have an ok harvest.

I planted courgettes in holey buckets last year with a rubbish result so this year I've got a nice boarder section with heaps of manure already spreading the goodness.  I think my bucket courgettes failed cos I planted to early. :/
2 Books and No idea!!!  Learning as I go!

I often put courgettes after first earlies (but then I do live in a very mild area so the potatoes get going early).

The trick is to be selective about harvesting the potatoes. Pull up one plant every now and then and replace it with a courgette. At that stage they're small enough not to be disturbed when you harvest the rest of the potatoes. That way you don't have to wait till they're all cleared.

If you have a compost heap of some sort that isn't a bin - say made from pallets or like mine under black polythene till ready to use - then you could grow your courgettes on there.  :D

I'll give that a go and makes sense too.
