Picked the 3rd qtr of the corn crop (36), it's done really well.  Loads for eatin' and freezin'.  Will definitely be doing 'Swift' again.  Managed to get to it just before the woodlice come a munchin' although they had started making inroads down the tassels.  I lost loads last year this way.

Lobbed the used corn stalks onto the compost and tidied up some of the squash vines.  Weeded under the brassica nettings, sprouts & PSB looking great, red cabbages not so much.  Pulled out the last of the Khol rhabi undercropping (it worked really well, but we're not fans)
Ate a few strawbs & rasps.  Harvested 6 huge cues  ::)  came home with 3 heavy carrier bags full.

Have you tried kohl rabi chips pigguns? They are gorgeous and we have been converted to it for that reason alone. If you are interested I will find the link for you

Tore down all my runner bean plants which hadn't survived the winds. They were starting to go over anyway so that's lots of stuff for the compost bins.

Cooked a spicy aloo saag with homegrown spuds and spinach which went down very well with the neighbours too. Resisted the urge to chuck courgettes straight onto the composter and instead took them home, grated and froze them.

Met my new plot neighbour. At last, someone is going to cut down all those weeds which keep infiltrating my plot. On the downside, I'll have to stop chucking snails onto his.

Watered and put into storage the last of the Picasso potatoes that I dug up yesterday. The house has been taken over by potatoes...

Cleared the fruit bed, gave the bushes some fresh compost and poultry pellets as recommended on here. Got rid of loads of willow herb that had grown huge while I was away.

Inspected the squash plants - I had 4 decent size ones. One was ready so I brought it in last week, and I was waiting for the other 3 to maybe get a bit bigger and harden off. One was so soft when I felt it this morning - as if it was rotting inside. As it was right next to my other decent one I decided to sacrifice it and take it off the plant :(

Went to look at the smallest one and the tree rats/ ground rats have been at it -grrrr! So onlyhave one left on the plant.

Any ideas how to keep them off my squash?

Weeding, weeding and more weeding!! ::)

I don't know what you can do about your animal problem really RJR_38 apart from the  ::)obvious but that risks other wildlife too.
We don't seem to have that problem (with ground rats anyway) - we have a huge supply of local moggies that visit overnight!!
As for squirrels, we're surrounded by trees, so the only problem we have is with small trees popping up all over the plots where the nuts/seeds have been buried!!

Yes don't want to risk other wildlife as we have a lot of it here. We are surrounded by trees also, so there are lots of squirrels but I have seen rats on the plot too (had a dead one a few months ago). I caught the squirrel in the act last year so I know it is probably a combination of both animals :(

No need to water, as we had an unexpected deluge yesterday while we were out.

Had to rearrange all the onions that were supposedly drying as they all got absolutely soaked. Hope they'll store OK.

Have raked out most of the beds for the autumn and winter brassicas. Bought lots of plug plants yesterday plus 15 kg of calçot bulbs to plant out. Will put most of the plug plants out this evening and the rest tomorrow. Calçots to go in during the week with the help of visitors.

Been away for 3 weeks so lots of weeds! Today though had to dig up all of my kestrel as had blight before hols so chopped all the tops off. Worried whether they were ok but they were lovely, really good size and mostly clean and free of holes and scab.
Lots of big beetroot and turnip and red onions lovely size too.
Weeds will have to wait until another day!

Is this on a new allotment site or in the garden next to the little pink bungalow?

Have rather overdone it: weeded and raked a few beds and planted out early and late white and green caulis, broccoli, loads of lettuce and leeks. Headache I woke up with this morning from over-indulgence last nigh to celebrate completion of the floor has now turned into a headache from too much exertion.

today was a bit of a clear up day for me too, with building my conservatory I have spent most of my weekends at home doing that. so armed with the strimmer and rotovator I visited my first half plot, There I strimmed all the paths, rotovated, picked a bucket of beans, a punnet of raspberries, a few potatoes and some beetroot, then I rotovated where the potatoes had been, after that I lugged it back to the car, by this time my back was killing me. so on the way home I popped into the other half plot, picked the beetroot, then came home.
