I've got a mattock, and it is genius on my heavy soil. Plus there's the pick edge for really tough bits.

Mmmm interesting combo.. In Africa, our Mattock was a strong digger hoe and on the other side was an axe.. They are mainly used for digging out trees/stumps and their roots.. so you could dig on one stroke and then chop on the next simply by a quick half rotation mid swing.
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

I've got lots of tree roots to get out, plus an old hardcore road.  ;) People use them on our site to break the ground in summer when it has set like concrete.
