I have just received a batch of 10 autumn fruiting raspberry canes (Polka variety) to put in my new allotment.

Unfortunately, the spot I shall be putting them isn't ready yet.

I have therefore planted each cane in a decent sized pot, some were 6" and some 9" just depending on the size of the root ball. I was careful though not to cover the roots too deeply. I watered them well and have put the pots in my unheated greenhouse

Now I am wondering when I should plant them out. Surely it would be easier to let them spring into life when the spring comes, start growing and by then, their roots will have grown enough to 'grab' the compost in the pots. It would simple then be a question of preparing a trench, backfilling leaving holes for 10 pots to be inserted, bang out the plants and pop them in.

Am I right ?

Surely there would be no pointy in planting them again, as 'bare root plants' in a few weeks when the spot is ready.

thanks for any advice provided :)

I'd get them into their permanent position as soon as you can - so that roots can grow out to anchor them in the soil before they put on leaf.

As soon as the bed is ready, I'd plant them out as otherwise you're just disturbing any new roots that form and risk them becoming pot bound with the roots going round in circles rather than out into the bed you're preparing.

If you have any spare ground, just heel them in.  (dig a hole, stuff them in, and cover the roots with soil.)

But get them planted properly before the buds start to sprout in Feb/March, or they might get slowed down a bit in growing next year.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

question
Cut or leave newly planted raspberry canes?
