Gardeners Question Time re Celeriac
« on: November 29, 2013, 21:20 »
I was driving and couldn't really concentrate on the R4 programme today other than to hear Celeriac mentioned in one of the questions. Did anyone on here listen to the full programme and were there any pearls of wisdom offered about this vegetable, which has now become our Family Favourite?

I love celeriac and so do chefs so we're in good company

It needs plenty of water at planting time and until it gets established. If you can't get to water it, make sure it's in moisture retentive soil, eg add muck!   :)

This year I managed to get some that are about five inches across. :D :D

Removing side leaves regularly once the base swelled to about an inch seemed to be key, just leaving a small tuft in the middle

F1 seed is far more reliable, I use one called Ilona, and it out performed Giant Prague and Prinz by miles.

We bought a tray of celeriac plants this year, as the ones I grew from seed last year were far too small and intense.

Have to say that they've done pretty well, and are about a good fist size, which is enough at a time.

We really only need a couple of dozen if that, so for £3.49, I suppose we did the right thing and more importantly, the plants were well established when they went in the ground from pots in the Greenhouse.

Give them another try Brave, as some years they are better than others! (bought from Notcutts GC).

Yes whilst we didn't grow any this year, I've always had really successful results doing this.
