What to do with strawberry plants?
« on: November 24, 2013, 17:46 »
I was the new owner of a 5 rod allotment yesterday (Saturday)  I have inherited a large strawberry patch. The plants themselves (or the leaves)still look green & healthy. What should I now do for the best, cover with fleece or just leave uncovered. Advice please

Pretty tough plants - I've never covered them (nor seen anyone else do it) - might be worth tidying them up - getting rid of dead leaves, cutting out any runners etc.

Cheers,

Bear in mind that strawberry plants have usually passed their best after the 3rd year - you presumably won't know how old they are but it might be worth trying to guess which might be the oldest, especially if they could do with thinning out anyway.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

We potted up the runners, they will either be planted in spring or given away.
