Planting apple tree
« on: November 14, 2013, 16:17 »
I have just purchased a maiden whip apple tree and would like to train it as a step over. Could someone please advise how deep I should plant, should the soil be level with the graft?  There is about 18" between root and graft.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

You must keep the graft away from the soil. If the soil level goes over or too near the graft the root stock will start growing at the expense of the top bit(the bit you want to grow).
Lots of info on the net about how to plant an apple tree.  :)
These are just my opinions based on what I have read, the filters my brain uses as a product of my upbringing, and the experiences I have had growing food. I am not intending to convince anyone I am right, just supply my opinion when it is asked for. I am also open to changing my opinions! Nick
