I have a friend who adds fresh horse manure to his beans all summer, then when he cuts the beans down in autumn he rakes of the dried left overs and puts that with the bean cutting in the compost. I have to say that he produces the biggest beans I have ever seen.

One good thing about covering manure, is that as it heats up, it dries out, and is easier to cart around.

A normal sized heap will reduce by at least two thirds that way, but the fibre content is still pretty good, it's just not as wet!

That's a very good point about manure reducing in size, Growster, and weight, after storing and composting.

What start's out as a voluminous mountain becomes a user-friendly godsend.  Of course, I'm talking about poop + straw here, not just pure poop, dung, faeces, and it may be that in this and other threads the term 'manure' is used to refer to either, leading to massive misunderstandings and talking at cross-purposes.

Defining terms at least enables us to get our meaning across, even if we don't always (rarely!) agree.

Thanks, GTG, and the general view round here is that farmyard manure is slightly better than horse manure, although the latter, if without too much straw, is perhaps easier and lighter to move around!

We have genuine farmyard manure from the local dairy stock farm, this year, and while it's very heavy to cart around, it is so black, that we need a torch sometimes..;0)
