Garlic and Asparagus
« on: October 20, 2013, 13:46 »
I just planted some garlic in my Asparagus bed well about 3 feet or more away from the crowns. But just read that they don't like each other. Apparently garlic can spread disease to Asparagus
Has any one had issues like this ? I won't do it again next year but I just had lots of space in the bed and it seemed such an ideal spot

What disease did it refer to?

There's lots of info "out there" about companion planting, and the opposite, antagonistic planting, and alliums in general are probably the most often mentioned as bad companions for a variety of other veg, although it's usually more to do with inhibiting growth than spreading diseases (often there is no explanation at all though!  ::))

I've had no apparent problems growing onions very near my asparagus - I wouldn't worry about your asparagus unless someone on here, or further research, corroborates what you have been reading.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I've planted garlic next to my asparagus for a number of years, but a short block wall separates them, mostly so that the massive asparagus roots won't invade the garlic's territory. It think that will be your biggest problem in planting garlic among them. Asparagus tops don't seem like they belong to a large plant, but trust me, the roots can be massive and either strangle or starve your garlic. There's still time to move the garlic.

Also, asparagus tends to prefer a more alkaline soil while garlic prefers a slightly acidic soil. The difference isn't huge but if you want to maximize your yields you'll need to decide what to cater to.
