Hi andy, yes I think you can be certain that this is potato scab, I had some like this, so I wont be growing  potatoes in the same spot again. They don't look very nice but are ok to eat.

Cheers

Scab is worse in alkali soil, so don't add any lime where you are growing potatoes next year, will you?

I think i can recall tipping a load of fire ashes some time ago onto the area that was worst affected, could they have made the soil alkali?

Yes, wood ashes are somewhat alkaline, although the effect doesn't last as long as using garden lime as the salts in it are much more soluble and tend to get leached away more quickly.

I had problems with scab which mainly affected the Maris Piper's, another member here suggested that I check this site out http://varieties.potato.org.uk/menu.php? the search facility on the site gives you the option to search for the scab resistant potato varieties along with a useful range of other options.

Quite a lot of my Desiree have scab, but it doesn't affect their eating qualities one iota. They don't require any more peeling than the unaffected spuds either.

They're just a bit off-putting as Jacket spuds, though
