Swede Tweed still thin.
« on: October 10, 2013, 10:39 »
Hi

Never grown Swede before. Sowed some in May. They're still small and thin. Do they suddenly bulk out in Autumn?

Thanks

No they should be fattening up by now.

Did you water them through the dry weather - they don't like to get too dry.

Ah I don't feed things. I only do organic growing.

Ah well I've been growing for 7 years and never feed after sowing. Obviously Swede must be something you really must feed.

do you add anything to your soil at all, in the way of nutrients? - to make up for what the plants are using to grow

I dig in compost before sowing.

I've a feeling Swedes are greedy feeders like celeriac.
I dug in a load of compost and manure to my celeriac bed and fed them 4 or 5 times over the growing season and have finally ended up with a decent sized root - never happened before so super- chuffed.

I think the big roots like these and swede need a lot of love and attention and especially water!
I fed mine with chicken poo pellets - i'm sure they're organic?

The only 1 successful Swede I've managed this year is still just over golf ball sized but the ground it's in isn't very fertile and I planted the seed straight in the ground. Might not bother with swedes next year - but celeriac yes :)

My swedes are huge.  I dusted the soil with organic blood bone and fish as well as organic chicken pellets a couple of weeks before sowing seeds.  Then about a couple of months after sowing I sprinkled some wood ash on it.  I watered once a week in the dry weather.  Voila huge swedes.

Slightly jealous as mine are small and neat

They went in late (due to decimation of first seedlings) and maybe they didn't get enough water.

I'll be eating them anyway but hope for better next year

(They did get fed with BFB and chicken poop pellets though  ;) )
