Sweetcorn - Never thought I'd ever say this
« on: September 25, 2013, 20:38 »
I've had enough of sweetcorn for this year. The family encouraged me to grow around 50 plants in the polytunnel and we're sweetcorned out. There are at least another dozen ready outside too

I grew sweetcorn for the first time this year and it was a revelation. The only experience I'd had of it before was that disgusting stuff that comes in tins. Straight from the plant to the pan and served with butter and sprinkled with freshly-ground sea salt and black pepper it was truly amazing.

But I only grew ten plants  :(

I am feeling very lucky.  This is my third attempt at sweetcorn.  I grew 9 plants, but 2 died after planting out.  So far we have had 4 cobs, which have been lovely.   There are more to come.  I grew Double Standard Bicolour from Real Seeds.

First time I have ever grown sweetcorn, I planted 12 seeds 9 grew which filled half a bed and all produced two or 3 corns. My daughters want me to grow twice as many next year so a whole beds worth are planned. Must say I had never tasted fresh sweetcorn until I grew it, there isn't anything like it...  :tongue2: Ummmm sweeeetcorrrnnn

I've grown it for the first time this year and it has been a revelation here too. The last 4 cobs were left too long, but I've had about 20 cobs from 16 plants.

Next year I am planting more, but in 2 sowings to spread the joy out over the season.  :)

I'm planning to grow it next year. What sort of yield should I expect from each plant?

Usually 11/2 per plant - allowing for average pollination. If you're super lucky, in a good year, with a following wind  :D you can get more.

We had great success with the Swiss Sweetcorn from RealSeeds. 98% germination, started late but grew quickly enough to make up for it. Great flavour and decent sized cobs. Everyone remarked on how it was the best sweetcorn they'd ever tasted....we're growing 80 next year!

When I pick more than we want, I freeze them straight away while they are still sweet.  But when I do get 2 cobs per plant, they often don't pollinate as well as the first one did.

My minipops did well too, and the excess are also in the freezer.  Well, what's left of them!  ;)

all produced two or 3 corns.
What variety were you growing please?

Next year I am planting more, but in 2 sowings to spread the joy out over the season.  :)
We grow three batches, the first goes into the greenhouse and is ready around 1st week of July.

Then we grow two batches for outside - first timed to go out just after last frost, and then second timed to be ready before Summer ends. The dates are a closely regarded secret - as never quite right :)

We had great success with the Swiss Sweetcorn from RealSeeds. 98% germination, started late but grew quickly enough to make up for it. Great flavour and decent sized cobs. Everyone remarked on how it was the best sweetcorn they'd ever tasted....we're growing 80 next year!

I have only grown the Supersweet varieties in recent years. They are all F1 so I doubt that is what you have from Realseeds (which I assume are open pollinated?), so you might want to try a Supersweet variety next year.  They are a lot sweeter even than homegrown "normal" corn :)

Don't let them cross-pollinate though (nor with your neighbours corn :( )

The other thing in their favour is that they crop much more quickly than conventional sweetcorn, so even in a bad Summer you still get a good harvest. Downside is often only one cob per plant, so the yield-per-area is not brilliant.
