My rotten tomatoes
« on: September 25, 2013, 14:58 »
Here are a few pics showing just a few of my tomatoes. To say I am gutted is an understatement.  I have bagged up about five bags to take to the council tip.  Some of them look healthy, as soon as you touch them they fall from the stem.  I have taken some inside to redden up, a few have been ok others have gone brown and squidgy.

The totally out of control toms in my neighbour's poly which I have been (sort of) looking after for the last 8 weeks are showing definite signs of blight now, and I've been frantically picking off the worst of the leaves so they don't look too bad when they return tomorrow (before they went they did say not to email them in the States if they got blight as they'd rather not know! )

They have got all the spare space in their freezer filled with toms I have picked for them, so I don't think they'll be too disappointed.

My toms have done well too but haven't finished yet, and my greenhouse is downwind of their polytunnel!   :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Somehow my outdoor tomatoes ripened early so I haven't got many left, but those that I do have looked as though they have been infected.
Heard today that blight has been confirmed at the lottie so that means the toms are done for. Good job I dug up all the potatoes a few weeks ago. Several plot holders still have potatoes in the ground so dont know what they will do.
It seems very late for blight or am I wrong?

It is late for blight but certainly in my area the conditions are ideal for it at the moment  :(

You have my sympathies. I lost 90% to blight last year! it was heart breaking. I had better luck this year. But if I m honest, I don t think it was only luck. I Bordeaux mixed the toms 3 times this year between June and August. And it was less rainy. I know the Bordeaux isn t for anyone, some want to avoid all sprays and I respect that.

I did use Bordeaux mix last year and had a decent tomato crop as a result. I waited this year as the weather has been fairly dry and have more or less got away with it I hope.

Tomatoes are nearly all in now and just a few rows of maincrop spuds still to dig.

Every year is different, isn't it?

OK, I have said before that this is my first time of planting veg and I am a total novice.  What is Bordeaux??

I have been looking at seeds on the computer, ones that are resistant to blight.  I may well try them for next year.  I just brought a packet from the supermarket, hundreds inside.  The ones on the net are 20 seeds for £3 something, bit of a difference.

I didn't spray this year at all so I am fortunate in getting the harvest I have. Last year I lost all my outdoor tomatoes to blight but salvaged some of the potatoes. Every year is a challenge.

  What is Bordeaux??

It's a copper fungicide spray - it just going through extra testing but might end up being banned by the EU. It's still available now though.

The formulation of this spray is a little bit different, with no threat of a ban
