Making a compost 'bin' out of old tyres ... is it possible ?

Is it possible to stack a few old car tyres on top of each other to make a compost bin ?

It would be pretty easy, almost certainly free of charge ... so what's the snag ?

I worked overseas and they actually used old tyres, filled with earth, to stabilize slopes. We don't make use at all (as far as I can see) of tyres in this country. They just clog up the landfill sites.

thanks for any input !!

Could be a bit tricky to mix and empty compost.

The ony problem I think woud be wether or not any chemicals could leach from the tyres into the compost.

I had thought of using large tyres as giant plantpots, but was unsure of the chemical risk,so did't do any more about it.

The garages around here have loads of large tyres ,which they were happy to give away,as they don't have to pay to dispose of, a

point to consider if you ever changed your mind once you had them.

I'm with Aunty on this one - it would be too difficult to turn or empty the contents from a stack of tires.

Once filled with compost (and consider that the tire bulges would also be filled), the tires would be very heavy and you could possibly hurt your back/other parts by trying to shift or lift them. For me that's not worth the risk, especially if you're the breadwinner.

Also, when you realize that it's not working out for you, then you will have to pay for removal of the tires. Might as well let the garages pay for it since they already charge customers for that service.

An easier way would either to stand skids on their ends and wire them together, or put in 4 posts, attach some fencing wire like poultry wire into a square. These would be much easier, and safer, to open up or work in.

Thank you !

Don't think I'll bother.

Will try and get some pallets and make up a compost bin, maybe will try and make a double one, or even a treble.

Will use one for leaf mould, about to get plenty of leaves in the next few weeks.

One will be for new compost, with t'other one maybe to help in the mixing process. Or maybe, when the first compost bin is full and rotting away, I can start the second.

I'll only need 7 pallets for a 3-way bin and maybe 3 more for the fronts

If you had the tyres on site it would be a shame not to make use of them. You could use them to make walls of a composting area, eg back and sides to make a larger area that you could wheel the barrow in and out of. The same as if you were making a timber one

Making a compost 'bin' out of old tyres ... is it possible ?
I managed to get hold of 4 'dumpy bags' today ... those big bags, which builders get sand and stone delivered in.

I think I could you these, at least initially, especially for the leaves, which are obviously starting to fall now.

I've been looking on Youtube for tips on compost bins, and I think the pallets actually make too large a bin. It would take over a year to fill it, so it won't generate much heat. I may, in the end, just pop in some 100 x 100 posts and construct a decent looking bin / bins.

I'll cut off the bottom of one of my dumpy bags, if I use it for compost ... but would it be OK to leave the others bags whole, when using it for leaf mould ?

thanks

As long as the top is left open, leaves in the dumpy bags should work fine. Just check after a rain to ensure it's not pooling inside the bag; if it does, a few drainage holes will do the trick.
