Autumn Planted Onion and shallot sets?
« on: September 16, 2013, 15:55 »
I've planted sets of onions and shallots the last two years and the results have been pretty pathetic to be honest but I am itching to plant some again this year again.Im trying to convince myself that the last two winters have just been bad ones for onions. What are the the experiances of other members?Plant in autumn r wait till spring?

and if you need any back up evidence : the last two years running our Autumn sown onions sets have performed very well indeed.

Shallots have been a bit variable tbh and although nothing special have been OK

Garlic very good on the whole too  :D

My autumn onions have done really well but the long cold spring did for the autumn planted shallot sets.  I think I will wait till spring for the shallots but I already have my onion sets (radar) waiting to go in.

Autumn planting Onions are a great filler gap for a few weeks before the main crop are ready. I do them every year and start eating as green onions on 1st May every year..

Shallots are normally planted on the shortest day and pulled on the longest day.. had good results for these as well. Also ready before the main crop. I found some for planting now on the instructions so trying them as well this year.

My fruit and veg area is part of my back garden (albeit an ever-increasing part  ;)) so I can't afford any failures if I can help it, so overwintering any of "the usual suspects" is a no-no for me - shallots are the first crop to be planted (late Feb) and do well for me, and the fact that they aren't ready until July is a bonus because I expect to be storing and using them for most of the winter.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I plant autumn onion sets and elephant garlic. Fill in the spaces in spring. It's one less area to worry about come spring when there's enough to do anyway.

I always plant both Autumn and Spring onions so that I have enough to keep me going for most of the year.
