Quick question re juice wines
« on: September 09, 2013, 10:20 »
Morning :)

Yesterday I found a couple of  DJs of juice wine at the back of a cupboard that I had forgotten about.  One is racked, the other not.

However both airlocks are dry, and the wine itself is a year old.  Will it still be OK, or should I just bin it?

Thanks :)

How do they smell?  I guess you will have 2 demi-johns of vinegar there and the unracked one might be terrible since its sat in its own sediment for so long.
Add me on PSN but nowadays I reach for the fork or hoe more than a controller

I'm afraid I have to agree 100% with Daamoot... :(  with the airlocks dry anything could have entered the wine...but...there's always a but...if it smells ok and if you have a way of getting some of the wine out (turkey baster) or like wise without stirring the wine up, just give it the smallest of tastes...  you never know you could have a great wine.. ;)

ps..what are they??

Well they are the top hat-like airlocks, so nothing of any particuar size could get in - bacteria and fungi however...

They are both perfectly clear, and the lees on the unracked one is very compact - obviously from a juice wine not much sediment anyway ;)

The racked one is a red WOW I think (label a bit blurred), and the unracked one is Pomegranate and blackcurrant tea??

I'll have to have a sniff tonight.

Sorry posted in here before I saw a separate section from homebrew!

Well I had some very fruity vinegar ;)

Not to worry, I think each 5L DJ cost in the region of 3€, so not a lot wasted... plus now I have some extra cupboard space (and I could start again)
