sweetcorn yellow not milky
« on: September 07, 2013, 17:51 »
My plants are around 7ft tall now and cobs are huge.
I have taken a few and the corns are yellow colour inside and not milky like I have been reading. Are they under ripe?  Apart from this they look fantastic.

They sound just ripe for harvesting. Enjoy!

The best test is tear the sheaths down a bit and if they look yellowing and kernels look full then eat some - you will soon see if they are 100% ready or not.. they will still be tasty if still a bit under done..

Great thanks.
I have around 100 plants and most have 2 cobs. albeit the second cob is much smaller. Do I pick one cob and let the other grow on?

Cob colours can vary according to the variety. The milkiness may refer to when you put your finger into a kernel to test if it's ready.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Agree with goosegirl, the silks need to be brown and crispy, the kernel a nice yellow (depth of colour depends on the variety), and the milkiness refers to the colour of the fluid which comes out a kernel when you stick your nail in it.
If all 3 of the above are present the cobs should be ready.

Mind you if they're yellow and no fluid comes out when you stick your nail in they might even be past it  :nowink:

Sorry, I should have been more descriptive.

The kernals are a yellowy liquid inside, when pierced.

I've just eaten our first sweet corn with the Sunday roast. Second to none.  :D

The whole cob wasn't quite full but it was milky when I picked it this morning and beautiful on the plate.

Remember too that corn goes more yellow once cooked. Mine looked pale before cooking but not afterwards
