water for veg
« on: September 07, 2013, 16:51 »
Hi, Just joined the forum.
I did have an allotment in my former home but now have to rely on a small patch in our garden.
I remember reading a book, many years ago about how much water veg need, and when. I cannot remember the title of the book but it was an old one.
Ring any bells with anyone?
I have had some spuds from my little plot, lots of runners, might try dwarf runners next year, and quiet a few tomatoes. One or two beetroot, they got swamped by the spuds, and maybe the odd carrot, swamped also:-)

Welcome to the site  :D

Sorry I don't know the book you're referring to, but of course watering requirements will vary according to exposure to the sun, exposure to the wind, soil type, open ground / pot (and plants being grown and their particular stage of growth).

The main rule with watering is, if you water at all, do it slightly less frequently but properly.  Don't just do a trickle of water daily, as that risks putting the plant under drought stress.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Welcome to the site Olyman. I agree with Yorkie about watering, but I would add, don't rely on the weatherman when he says it's going to rain 'cos he doesn't get it right for my area!!!! :(
