Moving brassicas
« on: September 07, 2013, 12:23 »
A few weeks ago I put the brassicas I had in pots out to where the spuds had been. Now I knew there wasn't enough space for them all there, but they were getting to big for their pots. So now I've got other space freeing up, my question is: can I move some of them again? They're probably about 8-10 inches high, so I'm worried whether the roots will be able to handle another move? thanks for any advice.

brassicas generally move quite well - I can offer no guarantees, of course  ;)  ::)

I would go for it.
Cabbages are great and seem happy to be moved.

Somebody was telling me that they used to buy cabbage plants bare-rooted.  So if they can put up with that kind of treatment, they must be pretty tough.

Buying at the right time Brassicas are always bare rooted and come in bundles wrapped in newspaper  :)

It was common to see them sold like that outside the old style garden shops and on market stalls. Still are on Stamford and Peterborough markets.

Sometimes I think we have lost our way. None of this module nonsense, sow them in a nursery bed, pull them out rather than dig, breaks the tap roots and makes a better root system. That is the way everybody did it 40 years ago and it worked well.

I am sure your plants will grow, especially as the days get cooler. Plant them deep, puddle them in with plenty of water, keep watered until they do not droop in the day.
