Pumpkins are picked
« on: September 04, 2013, 08:26 »
The neighbours and OH picked the pumpkins and squash yesterday and stacked them on pallets to ripen. The neighbours planted them before we arrived and we were worried that we would have to use them, but hopefully not. Lots of colours and shapes, and all far too large for two people! Some will go into the cellar in October. With these and all the bottles of stuff, we will not starve.

OH has now started to clear up.....shame I am busy making cheese! :lol:

I planted just two seeds from a pumpkin and they have more or less taken over my garden.  I love watching  how fast they grow.  I have a few small ones.  Is it best to just let them get on with growing, I have been watering like crazy as I planted them next to my runner beans so I have had to keep watered.

Thats an amazing lot of pumpkins you have there.

I just love all the weird and wonderful shapes - the ones that are almost rectangular are interesting  :wacko: I've just never seen any that shape before  :nowink:

Crikey O'Blimey O'Reilly!  ::)  :ohmy:  :lol:

Wonder how much that lot weigh? (Is it a garden you've got or half of Bulgaria?  :unsure:  :lol:)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I have to say we were worried tey were going to say they were our's, after we were given the dozens of tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and okra. But basically they planted them in about a third of the garden to keep the weeds down...and no doubt because they are so rampant they don't want to waste their space. They use our English neighbour's garden too, so maybe they will plant them there when we take our garden back. We will not plant any as all the neighbours will be trying to give us their surplus, as they did with toms and cucumbers. They only water them to get them going, once they start flowering they don't water however wilted and hot they get. Even brassicas are watered sparingly or they get the dreaded flea beetle.

I have no idea what they are going to do with them all. They have told us we will be putting some in our cellar,  :ohmy:but they are only two, as are we, with one daughter and a couple of other family. They use them mostly for sweet dishes, they don't like it made into soup as it is too sweet (though they seem to have exceptionally sweet tooth!)

It looks as if I will be scouring the forum for recipes. :D

Wow - that is some crop of pumpkins. Could you sell some either at your gate or at a local market. Just a thought.  :)
