Fig Tree

Does anyone have experience of growing a fig tree?  One of my colleagues says they have one in the garden but haven't had any fruit from it yet, I thought they were for Mediterranean climates, but would love a small one if I can get fruit from it, nothing like fresh figs.

South facing wall or building, and the roots need to be very confined in poor soil. (Silly figs, no cake for them   )

Thanks, I've now quizzed her and she said her Greek husband bought it to remind him of home, just plonked it in the back garden and it's grown massive and bears fruit!  I think I'll try one in a container as don't really have the room for a big tree anyway and that seems to be the way to go!

They're a lovely plant even without the fruit.  Super leaves

I've got 2 little ones on my plot. Most of the plots on our site have them and they seem to grow well with no protection at all.

Most common one is a Brown Turkey fig and i know quite a few people have this outdoors all year with no problems.  I have just orderd a Bavarian fig (Bavaria gets bloomin cold in the Winter) and apparently it can withstand down to minus 20.  As Aunty says try and grow against South facing wall and the recommendation is to keep in a large pot buried below ground as they are very vigorous once established.  I actually don't like figs but her indoors loves em and i like to keep her happy
