celery problem
« on: August 30, 2013, 20:51 »
hi everyone.

i'm hoping you can help me out, actually help my dad out but he's stuck in the dark ages and can't/ won't use a computer. lol.

there seems to be a problem with the leaves on the celery plants this year. the same seed's being used as last year. they germinated ok and have grown to a size they should so i'm assuming the actual seed is ok? they have now got brown patches on the leaves until they dry up and die completely.

i can't attach the photo's that i took because they are apparently too big.

any help or advice would be great.

thanks in advance.

Could you re-size the photos and try them again?

A picture always helps a diagnosis.

Photo would help, without it, sounds like dry, for example.

sorry for the poor quality. couldn't figure out how to re size, so had to take a photo of the screen on a different camera.

hope you can get a rough idea though.

You just might have leaf blight which can also affect celery. There's more info on it in the link:

that does sound pretty similar.

i'm assuming it's not in the seeds as i've been given some of the same plants and they are lush and doing well.

if it's in the soil any idea how long it will stay there? and how far away from the area should next years crop be planted? they are in raised beds so i guess that should make getting away from it next year a bit easier ;)

Normally you'd take all the affected plant parts and bin them, careful not to touch other plants or soil and spread the problem further. Dedicated vinyl gloves that you'd also bin would be ideal.

By moving the new plants into other beds, you should be okay but the problem comes with wet weather so you might need to shield the plants in particularly wet times. It's not a guarantee but worth a try.
